balsa wood sculpture

The most recent project in my sculpture class was to construct a human figure using balsa wood. The figure had to display some type of active motion. My resulting sculpture was a human in the act of diving. It was in the downward part of the dive so it need to be held up to elevate the piece. I settled with using an old book laying it flat and tearing the pages to simulate the splash of water. Also the color had to be effective to help the viewer visualize the motion. The blue to white color transition on the piece makes it seem as though the diver is mid submersion into the water.
